By using a kinematically nonlinear continuum theory and the von Kármán plate model, the authors study the instability and postbuckling behaviour of a graded coating bonded to a homogeneous substrate with an interface crack or a highly damaged interfacial zone and subjected to uniform in-plane compressive strain. The shear modulus of the coating is assumed to be of the form \(\mu_c= \mu_s\exp(\gamma y)\), where \(\mu_s\) is the modulus of the substrate and \(\gamma h_c\) is the material nonhomogeneity constant which may be positive or negative.
