Die Summe \(S_{n}\) der Reihe \[ S_{n} = 1 - \frac{(n - 1)n}{1.2} 2^2 + \frac{(n - 2) (n - 1) n (n + 1)}{1.2.3.4}2^4 \] \[ - \frac{(n - 3) (n - 2) (n - 1)n (n + 1)(n + 2)}{1.2.3.4.5.6} 2^6 + \cdots \] hat den Werth \(\pm (2n - 1)\), wobei das obere oder untere Vorzeichen gilt, je nachdem \(n\) ungrade oder grade ist. Werden zwei Reihen \(S_{n}\) und \(S_{n + 1}\) addirt, so erhält man eine neue Reihe: \[ 1 - 2^2 \cdot \frac{n^2}{1.2} + 2^4 \cdot \frac{n^2 (n^2 - 1^2)}{1.2.3.4} - 2^6 \cdot \frac{n^2(n^2 - 1^2) \; (n^2 - 2^2)}{1.2.3.4.5.6} + \cdots , \] deren Summe \(= \pm 1\) ist, je nachdem \(n\) grade oder ungrade ist.
