An almost completely decomposable (acd) group \(X\) is an Abelian finite extension of a finite rank completely decomposable group \(R\), that is, \(G=X/R\) is a finite Abelian group. If \(G_p\) is the \(p\)-primary component of \(G\), then the localisation of \(X\) at \(p\) is the pre-image in \(X\) of \(G_p\). This paper contains a wealth of results relating the structure of \(X\) to that of its localizations in the case that \(R\) is a canonical subgroup of \(X\), for example a regulating subgroup or the regulator. \(X\) is called \(p\)-local if \(G=G_p\) and \(p\)-local acd groups have many nice properties, notably uniqueness up to near isomorphism of decompositions into indecomposable summands. The authors describe properties of \(X\) which are inherited from its localizations. For example, they show that \(R\) is the regulator of \(X\) iff \(R\) is the regulator of each localization, and that \(G\) is cyclic iff each localization is cyclic modulo the regulator.
