The authors are working in a setting that is biorthogonal and second generation. Taking a given sparse subdivision rule \(P\), they create from it sparse analysis coefficients \(a\) and \(b\), and they complete the system by creating the remaining sparse reconstruction coefficients \(q\). Implicitly, their construction induces an inner product. The inner product used is specific to each subdivision rule. They present quadratic and cubic \(B\)-spline subdivision and the four-point interpolatory subdivision of \textit{N. Dyn, D. Levin} and \textit{J. A. Gregory} [Comput. Aided Geom. Des. 4, 257-268 (1987; Zbl 0638.65009); ACM Trans. Graph. 9, No. 2, 160-169 (1990; Zbl 0726.68076)]. Several examples of the use of this approach on images, curves and surfaces are given.
