    Let \({\mathcal B}\) be a two-dimensional commutative Banach algebra with a unit \(I\). Hence \({\mathcal B}=\{ aI+bB\); \(a,b\in {\mathbb C}\}\) for some fixed \(B\) in \({\mathcal B}\). In the case where \({\mathcal B}\) is an operator algebra on a Hilbert space, the norm of \(aI+bB\) is given explicitly using \(a, b\) and \(\|B\|\). When \(B^2=I\), this is a theorem of \textit{I. Feldman, N. Krupnik} and \textit{A. Markus} [ Integral. Equations Oper. Theory 14, No. 1, 69-91 (1991; Zbl 0737.47006)]. As a consequence, the author finds a formula for a norm on two-dimensional \(Q\)-algebra ( i.e., quotient algebra of the form \(A \slash J\), where \(A\) is a uniform algebra and \(J\) a closed ideal of \(A\)) using a part metric and the norm of a bounded point derivation on \(A\).
