Two methods to solve systems of ordinary differential equations arising from spatial discretization of parabolic partial differential equations are investigated. A one-step least-squares method due to \textit{O. C. Zienkiewicz} and \textit{R. W. Lewis} [Earthquake Engrg. Struct. Dyn. 1, 407-408 (1973)] and a two-step least-squares method are analyzed with respect to their consistency, stability and their tendency to spurious oscillations. Detailed numerical experiments with comparisons to other methods evaluate the applicability of the presented methods.
