Necessary and sufficient conditions for the stability of 2D linear systems are established in the form of some linear matrix inequalities. They are directly linked to a class of quadratic Lyapunov functions generating the results in 1D systems theory. The main advantages of the approach are the simplicity of the expression and easy and reliable numerical implementation.
