Let \(f\) be a function belonging to \(L^P(\mathbb{R}^d)\), \( \widehat{f}\) be the Fourier transform of \(f\) and \(\mathcal{M} \) be a smooth compact hypersurface in \(\mathbb{R}^d)\), endowed with a surface-carried measure \(d_\mu \). The restriction problem is as follows: for which exponents \(q\) end given \(1<p<2\) does the inequality \[ (\int_{\mathcal{M}} | \widehat{f}(\xi)| ^qd \mu_\xi)^{1/q}\geq C| | f| |_{L^P(\mathbb{R}^d)}. \] The purpose of this paper is describe the state of progress on the restriction problem in harmonic analysis. The main attention is concentrated on several concrete examples of underlying manifolds with large groups of symmetries. Moreover, the problems of optimal \(C\) constants and of the existence of extremizers are considered.
