The authors study the number of bifurcating limit cycles for a piecewise quadratic system. All the considered differential systems are piecewise smooth in two zones separated by a straightline. They prove for such systems the existence of 16 crossing limit cycles and it is established that this is the best lower bound for the quadratic class. Moreover, in the studied cases, all limit cycles are nested and bifurcating from a period annulus of an isochronous quadratic center.
