The authors investigate the steady vortex solutions for the ideal incompressible Euler equation in a planar bounded domain. They construct steady vortex patches by maximizing the kinetic energy subject to some constraints for vorticity, which is called the vorticity method and which has been used extensively in the literature. The advantage of this method is that the energy of the solution can be analyzed easily, which is essential to prove stability. Firstly, the authors construct steady double vortex patches with opposite rotation directions by solving a variational problem for the vorticity. Then, they discuss the energy and stability of the vortex patch solutions obtained. Finally, they show that uniqueness implied stability.
