Given a \(\lambda\)-Banach ideal of operators \(\mathcal A\), a subset \(K\) of a Banach space \(E\) is said to be \(\mathcal A\)-compact if there is a Banach space \(X\) and \(T\) in \({\mathcal A}(X,E)\) such that \(K\subset T(B_X)\). If \({\mathcal A}\) and \(\mathcal B\) are \(\lambda\)-Banach ideals, then a function \(f\) from a Banach space \(E\) to a Banach space \(F\) is said to be \(({\mathcal A},{\mathcal B})\)-compactifying if \(f\) maps \(\mathcal A\)-compact sets in \(E\) to \(\mathcal B\)-compact sets in \(F\). In this paper, the authors study \(({\mathcal A},{\mathcal B})\)-compactifying polynomials and holomorphic functions. They show that, if the ideal \(\mathcal A\) is stable under projective tensor products for the pair \((\ell_1,E)\), then every homogeneous polynomial on \(E\) is \(({\mathcal A},{\mathcal A})\)-compactifying. In particular, this allows them to show that every weakly integral polynomial is \((\Pi_p,\Pi_p)\)-compactifying for \(1\leq p<\infty\) and that every weakly extendible polynomial is \((\Pi_1,\Pi_1)\)-compactifying. In the final section, the authors study \(({\mathcal A},{\mathcal B})\)-compactifying holomorphic functions, introducing the radius of \(({\mathcal A},{\mathcal B})\)-compactification at a point and showing that a holomorphic function is \(({\mathcal A},{\mathcal B})\)-compactifying if and only if there is a point \(x_0\) where the function has a strictly positive radius of \(({\mathcal A},{\mathcal B})\)-compactification and each of the terms in the Taylor series expansion of \(f\) about \(x_0\) is \(({\mathcal A},{\mathcal B})\)-compactifying. Editorial remark. The development of the material in this paper is apparently inspired to some extent by \textit{R. M. Aron} and \textit{P. Rueda} [Publ. Res. Inst. Math. Sci. 48, No. 4, 957--969 (2012; Zbl 1270.46038)].
