Let \(X\) be a smooth complex projective variety defined over a number field \(k\). Then a category \(\mathcal M\) of realizations define a filtration \(F_\mathcal M\) on the Chow group \(\text{CH}^p (X_\mathbb C)_\mathbb Q\) by spreading out the cycles. If \(\mathcal M\) consists of mixed Hodge structure without any additional structure, it can be shown that the associated filtration coincides with the filtration of \textit{M. Green} and \textit{Ph. Griffiths} [Int. Math. Res. Not. 2003, No.9, 477--510 (2003; Zbl 1049.14002)], assuming the Hodge conjecture. When \(\mathcal M\) contains Hodge structure and étale cohomology, the author proves that if the second graded component \(\text{Gr}^r_{F_\mathcal M} \text{CH}^p (X_\mathbb C)_\mathbb Q\) does not vanish, it contains a nonzero element that is represented by a cycle defined over a field of transcendental degree one. He also proves similar results for higher dimensional graded components assuming a conjecture of Beilinson as well as Grothendieck's generalized Hodge conjecture.
