The classical Weierstrass approximation theorem states that any continuous real valued function on a compact subset of the real numbers can be uniformly approximated by a polynomial function. This result extends to functions on a compact subset of the real numbers having values in a convex subset of a finite dimensional vector space over \(\mathbf R\) or \(\mathbf C\). This result cannot be extended to functions having values in a sphere (because such polynomials are only constant polynomials). In this paper, it is shown that every \(2\pi\)-periodic continuous function having values in a sphere of dimension \(d>1\) can be uniformly approximated by trigonometric polynomials. It is also shown that the frequency responses of the set of conjugate quadrature can be uniformly approximated by frequency responses of finitely supported conjugate quadrature filters. Finally it is proved that every refinable function whose integer translates are orthonormal can be approximated by compactly supported refinable functions whose integer translates are orthonormal in a Sobolev space. It is an appreciable fact that the author has included a complete set of references needed for this article, making it selfcontained.
