The authors consider \(C^*\)-algebras generated by \(q\)-normal operators and their \(K\)-theory, \(K\)-homology, and the index pairing between \(K\)-theory and \(K\)-homology. Let us recall that a deformed, \(q\)-normal operator \(T\) on a Hilbert space is defined by the operator equation \(TT^* =q^2 T^*T\) for \(0 < q < 1\). The complex \(^\ast\)-algebra generated by \(T\) is known as the coordinate ring of the quantum complex plane \(\mathbb C_q\). There is the \(C^*\)-algebra generated by \(T\) with the spectrum \(\sigma (|T|)\) of \(|T|=\sqrt{T^*T}\) equal to the interval \([0, \infty)\), viewed as \(C_0(\mathbb C_q)\) of continuous functions vanishing at infinity on \(\mathbb C_q\). There is also the \(C^*\)-algebra generated by \(T\) (non-invertible) with \(\sigma (|T|) \not= [0, \infty)\), defined to be the crossed product \(C^*\)-algebra of the unitization of the ideal of \(C_0(\sigma (|T|))\) vanishing at zero, by the action of \(\mathbb Z\) of pointwise multiplication by \(q\). The \(K\)-theory groups of \(C_0(\mathbb C_q)\) as well as its unitization \(C(S_q^2)\), the \(C^*\)-algebra of continuous functions on the quantum \(2\)-sphere \(S_q^2\), obtained as the one-point compactification of \(\mathbb C_q\), both decompose into short exact sequences of \(C^*\)-algebras, involving the crossed product \(C^*\)-algebra of \(C_0(0, \infty)\) by \(\mathbb Z\). They are computed by the six-term exact sequence of \(K\)-theory groups and the Pimsner-Voiculescu six-term diagram for the crossed product. Similarly, the case where the interval \((0, \infty)\) is replaced with \(\sigma (|T|)\setminus\{ 0\}\) is computed, but with more case-by-case considerations on the spectrum \(\sigma (|T|)\) to obtain the results in the general case. Also, the \(K\)-theory classes of the zero \(K\)-theory groups are represented by the Bott projections as well as the deformed Powers-Rieffel projections. What is more, even Fredholm modules for the \(C^*\)-algebra crossed products mentioned above are constructed by which their zero \(K\)-homology groups are represented. Furthermore, the index pairing between the \(K\)-theory classes and the \(K\)-homology classes for the crossed products is numerically computed by using those and these representatives.
