This interesting paper considers how a non-uniform current, that might be generated by long internal waves, interacts with short surface waves and causes patterns on the surface of the sea that are of interest. In particular, these effects could be significant when regions of steep breaking waves occur that may give rise to specular radar scattering. The authors consider a number of models, and present results of some fascinating numerical calculations based on two- and three-dimensional models.
