An account is given of the prehistory and the sources of the (sometimes bitter) controversy between R. A. Fisher and J. Neyman, especially the different scientific views in experimental design, testing of hypotheses, fiducial and confidence intervals are explained. Fisher lived in the tradition of the philosophy of Galton and Karl Pearson, while Neyman was educated in the conceptual mathematics of his Polish contemporaries.
