The author extends the well-known notion of a strongly homogeneous group G, an abelian group with Aut G acting transitively on the pure rank-one subgroups of G, to E-transitive groups. In this case the endomorphism ring \(E=End G\) acts transitive on the pure rank-one subgroups. The author gives various characterizations of E-transitive groups, which extends and improves earlier work of \textit{P. Krylov} [Sib. Mat. Zh. 24, No.2, 77-84 (1983; Zbl 0536.20038)] from strongly homogeneous groups to E-transitive groups. This is one of the results. If C is the center of E, then G is E- transitive if and only if C is a strongly homogeneous p.i.d., G is a C- module and E acts transitively on the pure rank-one C-submodules. The existence of E-transitive groups which are not strongly homogeneous, was established only after this paper appeared [see \textit{M. Dugas}, \textit{J. Hausen} in ''Proceedings of the Perth-conference on abelian groups 1987'', Contemp. Math. (to appear)].
