Finite and infinite matrices that generalize the Pascal triangle have been studied by different authors using various techniques. In this paper a new approach is proposed for the study of a class of infinite generalized Pascal matrices involving classical binomial coefficients. Bilaterally infinite matrices are constructed as matrix representations of linear operators on spaces of formal Laurent series. They contain as submatrices most of the generalizations of the Pascal matrices. The author constructs one- and two-parameter groups in this setting that are isomorphic or anti-isomorphic to subgroups of GL\((2,C)\). Explicit formulae for powers and inverses generalizing some previous results are obtained. Symmetry, duality and factorization properties of the generalized Pascal matrices are discussed. Eventually, some interesting problems for future research are pointed out. In the matrix factorization of \(A\) (Proposition 4.2, p. 188) the entry \(c\) in the last matrix should be \(0\).
