The authors study piecewise expanding maps, mainly in several dimensions and without assuming Markov property. It is known that ergodic properties of such maps are very sensitive to the details of the boundaries of the domains on which the map is smooth. The authors make the key assumption that the topological pressure of the boundary is strictly less than the topological pressure of the entire space. Then the authors prove the existence of equilibrium states, the exponential decay of correlations and the central limit theorem. The proofs are based on the construction of Markov extensions and using Young's tower techniques. The paper is very well written.
