In this paper the authors investigate the limiting behavior as \(\gamma\) tends to \(\infty\) of the best polynomial approximation in the Sobolev-Laguerre space \(W^{N,2}([0,\infty);e^{-x})\) and the Sobolev-Legendre space \(W^{N,2}([-1,1])\) with respect to the Sobolev-Laguerre inner product \[ \varphi(f,g):=\sum_{k=0}^{N-1}a_k\int_0^\infty f^{(k)}(x)g^{(k)}(x)e^{-x}dx+\gamma\int_0^\infty f^{(N)}(x)g^{(N)}(x)e^{-x}\,dx \] and with respect to the Sobolev-Legendre inner product \[ \varphi_1(f,g):=\sum_{k=0}^{N-1}a_k\int_{-1}^1 f^{(k)}(x)g^{(k)}(x)dx+\gamma\int_{-1}^1 f^{(N)}(x)g^{(N)}(x)\,dx, \] respectively, where \(a_0=1\), \(a_k\geq 0\), \(1\leq k\leq N-1\), and \(N\geq 1\) is an integer. In order to establish the results the authors also consider the discrete-continuous Sobolev inner product \[ \psi(f,g)=\sum_{k=0}^{N-1}f^{(k)}(0)g^{(k)}(0)+\int_0^\infty f^{(N)}(x)g^{(N)}(x)e^{-x}\,dx, \] and \[ \psi_1(f,g)=\sum_{k=0}^{N-1}f^{(k)}(-1)g^{(k)}(-1)+\int_{-1}^1 f^{(N)}(x)g^{(N)}(x)\,dx. \] They prove that if \(\{T_n^{(\gamma)}(x)\}_{n=0}^\infty\) and \(\{U_{n}(x)\}_{n=0}^\infty\) denote the monic Sobolev orthogonal polynomial systems with respect to \(\varphi_1(\cdot,\cdot)\) and \(\psi_1(\cdot,\cdot)\), respectively, then \[ T_n^{(\infty)}(x):=\lim_{\gamma\to\infty}T_n^{(\gamma)}(x)=U_n(x). \] A similar relation is established by considering the monic Sobolev orthogonal polynomial systems with respect to \(\varphi(\cdot,\cdot)\) and \(\psi(\cdot,\cdot)\).
