Firstly, the paper demonstrates that a class of nonlinear delay differential equation used to model regenerative chatter satisfies all the conditions of Hopf bifurcation. Secondly, it gives a precise characterization of critical eigenvalues on the stability boundary and continues with a complete study of Hopf parameter, of the period of bifurcating solution, and of associated Floquet exponents. Finally, several cases are simulated in order to show the Hopf bifurcation occurring at the stability boundary, and a a method of integration of delay differential equation is also given. The above work is mainly related to the work of \textit{B. D. Hassard} et al. [Theory and applications of Hopf bifurcations. London Mathematical Society Lecture Note Series, 41. Cambridge etc.: Cambridge University Press, Cambridge. VI (1981; Zbl 0474.34002)].
