In this paper, bifurcations of (nonconstant) periodic orbits from an isolated equilibrium of an autonomous Hamiltonian system are considered. The conditions for bifurcations are formulated in terms of the topological degree of the gradient of the Hamiltonian and eigenvalues of its Hessian which may be degenerate. In particular, results from \textit{W. Radzki} [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl. 55, No. 1--2A, 153--166 (2003; Zbl 1034.37036)] are generalised. The proofs are based on a bifurcation theorem for Hamiltonian systems presented by \textit{E. N. Dancer} and \textit{S. Rybicki} [Differ. Integral Equ. 12, No. 2, 147--160 (1999; Zbl 1015.34032)].
