This is a very mathematical treatment of various tools used in soliton theory. Examples of there tools are: inverse scattering, Bäcklund transformations, Painlevé analysis and the linear equivalence method. Their tools are often described in ways that are known from earlier texts, as in fact is stated by the authors. Practical problems addressed include: thin elastic rods, coupled pendulum oscillations, and blood flows in arteries. Somewhat exotic problems, such as related to Tzitzeica surfaces, also appear. This book can be useful as a reference, though it should be checked for the unavoidable (in the first English edition) misprints.
