The class of matrices with the same inertia is called balanced if the number of positive and negative eigenvalues of its members is the same. The authors give conditions that grant that any \(R\)-linear transformation on the space of real or complex matrices that preserves invertible matrices is invertible and specifies its form. Similar results are proved for any \(R\)-linear transformation on real symmetric or complex Hermitian matrices of even order that preserves the nonsingular balanced inertia class.
