Many classical results of probabilistic number theory establish a normal limiting distribution for a class of arithmetical functions. Here functions are constructed for which this convergence is extremely fast; the error term is of size \(O (\log^{1/2- \varepsilon} x)\). These functions are given by the formula \(g(p^r)= G^{-1} (\{ \gamma p\}) \log^{1/2} p\) if \(r=1\) and \(|G^{-1} (\{\gamma p\}) |\leq \log \log p\), 0 otherwise. Here \(\gamma\) is an irrational number and \(G\) denotes the standard normal distribution function. (The referee thinks that this works only under certain conditions on the order of rational approximations to \(\gamma\)).
