The authors investigate modes of subspaces of affine spaces over arbitrary commutative rings with unity. The main theorem is the following: Theorem 3.9. For an affine space \((E, {\mathcal R}, P)\), each algebra \(((E, {\mathcal R}, P)S, \Omega)\) of affine subspaces of \((E, {\mathcal R}, P)\), where \(\Omega \subseteq J^0_R\cup \{P\}\) is a Płonka sum of \(\Omega\)-reducts of affine \(R\)-spaces \((E|U, {\mathcal R}, P)\) over the projective space \(((E, +, R) S,+)=: L(E)\) by the functor \(F: (L(E))\to (\Omega)\) with \(UF= \{x+ U\mid x\in E\}\) and \((U\to V)F: UF\to VF\); \(x+U\mapsto x+V\). Here an affine space \((E, {\mathcal R}, P)\) is defined, for a module \((E, +, R)\) over the commutative ring \(R\) with unit, as a mode \((E, {\mathcal R}, P)\) with binary operations \(r\), \(r\in R\), and one ternary Mal'tsev operation \(P\). (Let us recall that a mode is an algebra such that each of its singletons is a subalgebra, and each operation is a homomorphism.) \(J^0_R\) comprises the set of units \(r\) of \(R\) for which \(1-r\) is also invertible. Some examples (applications of Theorem 3.9) are given.
