The paper deals with congruence identities, i.e. lattice equations satisfied by the congruence lattices of all the algebras in a variety. This is an area in which Professor Alan Day was greatly interested and to which he made profound contributions. The paper surveys the struggles of Alan Day and other algebraists to understand this subject. Recent results, including some of Alan Day's, and several open problems are given.
