The second and the fifth author [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 82, 81-98 (1992; Zbl 0767.55010)] showed that, for rings, there is a natural isomorphism between topological Hochschild homology and MacLane homology. Actually, they proved that topological Hochschild homology satisfies a set of axioms known, by previous results of \textit{M. Dzhibladze} and the second author, to characterize MacLane homology [J. Algebra 137, 253-296 (1991; Zbl 0724.18005)]. In this paper, the authors construct an explicit map between MacLane homology and topological Hochschild homology. They also give evidence why the relations between these homologies should be understood in terms of May's et al. ``brave new algebra''.
