The review begins with a survey of the literature on debris flows and a discussion on the basic aspects of their phenomenology. Aiming at a better understanding of the assumptions underlying the existing models and wishing to derive new, more fitted models, the authors apply the thermodynamical theory of mixtures to formulate a general (two-phase) model for debris flows. By some examples, they show how such a model can be investigated numerically, together with appropriate boundary conditions.
