The authors define and study an equivariant version of the notion of topological complexity introduced in [\textit{M. Farber}, Discrete Comput. Geom. 29, No. 2, 211--221 (2003; Zbl 1038.68130)]. The equivariant topological complexity is a numerical invariant defined for spaces equipped with a compact group action. The authors analyse several examples and computations which illustrate similarities and differences with the non-equivariant case. The authors show how the equivariant topological complexity can be used to estimate the usual topological complexity of fibre spaces.
