The authors obtain sufficient and necessary criteria under which the derivative of the Minkowski question mark function \(?(x)\) is zero respectively infinity. The conditions are formulated in terms of a partial sum of the continued fraction coefficients of \(x\). These results improve earlier work of \textit{J. Paradís} et al. [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 253, No. 1, 107--125 (2001; Zbl 0995.26005)] and of \textit{A. A. Dushistova} and \textit{N. G. Moshchevitin} [J. Math. Sci., New York 182, No. 4, 463--471 (2012); translation from Fundam. Prikl. Mat. 16, No. 6, 33--44 (2010; Zbl 1273.11109)].
