The main result of the paper establishes an alternative on some Finsler spheres between the existence of infinitely many prime closed geodesics and the existence of a certain number of closed geodesics with irrational average indices. The result is sharpened on bumpy Finsler spheres. The approach is based on the index iteration theory for closed geodesics.
