This paper presents a novel practical procedure for detecting nondegenerate or mildly degenerated Hopf-Neimark-Sacker (HNS) bifurcations in families of periodically forced oscillators. In this sense, semi-algebraic recognition conditions for HNS families that determine the geometry of the resonance sets are derived and it is explained how recognition conditions determine the local geometry of the resonance set attached to the central resonant HNS bifurcation point. These results are applied in two case studies: the case of a periodically forced Duffing-Van der Pol oscillator and a periodically forced Volterra-Lotka system.
