For an immersion \(F: N\to\mathbb{R}^n\) of a closed surface \(N\) into Euclidean space the Willmore integral \(W(F)\) is defined using the mean curvature \(H\) of \(F(N)\) and the area form darea associated to the induced metric \(W(F):= \int_N H^2\) darea. In 1965, Willmore conjectured that for any immersion \(F: T^2\to \mathbb{R}^n\) of the 2-dimensional torus, \(n\geq 3\), the inequality \(W(F)\geq 2\pi^2\) holds. In many special cases this conjecture has been confirmed. Now, under the condition that the \(L^p\)-norm of the Gauss curvature is sufficiently small, it is confirmed in some new special cases. Nevertheless, in general, the Willmore conjecture remains still open.
