This paper presents a quantitative mechanistic model for electric field induced fatigue crack growth in ferroelectrics. A small-domain switching model is used in the case of plain strain, and the crack perpendicular to the poling direction of ferroelectrics is studied under an electric field oriented along or against the poling direction. The authors perform a step-by-step analysis to quantify the fatigue crack growth, and investigate various steps of fatique crack propagation under an alternating electric field, neglecting the effect of crack interaction. The paper may appeal to engineers working in the area of fracture mechanics.
