The author considers periodic Fourier multipliers \(\sigma(D)\), defined by symbols \(\sigma(\eta)\in L^\infty(\mathbb{Z})\). Namely, in terms of the Fourier series \(F(f)\) of the function \(f\) on \(T= [0,2\pi]\): \[ \sigma(D)f(x)= F^{-1}(\sigma(\eta) F(f)(\eta)). \] The operator \(\sigma(D)\) is obviously bounded in \(L^2(T)\), whereas it is bounded in \(L^p(T)\), \(1<p<\infty\), if \(\sigma(\eta)\) satisfies the well-known Marcinkiewicz condition. Under the Marcinkiewicz condition, \(\sigma(D)\) is continuous as well from the Besov space \(B^r_{p,q}(T)\) into itself for \(0<p\), \(q\leq\infty\), \(r\in\mathbb{R}\), with the exception of the case of the Hölder spaces \(p=\infty\), \(q=\infty\), for which boundedness fails, see \textit{W. Arendt} and \textit{S. Bu} [Proc. Edinb. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 47, No. 1, 15--33 (2004; Zbl 1083.42009)]. In the present paper the author gives very precise results describing the loss of regularity in this case, and extends the analysis to pseudo-differential operators with symbol \(\sigma(x,\eta)\) satisfying the estimates \[ |\Delta^\alpha_\eta \partial^\beta_x\;\sigma(x,\eta)|\leq C_{\alpha,\beta}|\eta|^{-\rho-|\alpha|},\;x\in T,\;\eta\in\mathbb{Z}, \] where \(\rho\geq 0\) and \(\Delta\) denotes the discrete derivative on \(\mathbb{Z}\).
