The paper offers a complete classification of ruled surfaces in three-dimensional Euclidean space, with emphasis on the previously less familiar non-developable case, for which a new invariant is proposed, namely the normal deviation function that is used as a test whether a non-developable ruled surface is the principal normal ruled surface of a curve. Some curious properties of ruled surfaces linked to the classification problem are discussed too. The text is well organized and concise but also quite comprehensive and easy to follow, with rigorous definitions and proofs of the main results. The topic could be interesing to both professional geometers and stuents in mathematics.
