Let \(G\) be a finite group that acts faithfully and completely reducibly on a finite vector space \(V\). In [Ill. J. Math. 35, No. 3, 499--505 (1991; Zbl 0713.20007)], \textit{A. Espuelas} proved that, if \(|G||V|\) is odd, then there exists \(v \in V\) such that \(|G : C_{G}(v)| \geq |G|^{\frac{1}{2}}\). In this article, Espuelas' theorem [loc. cit.] is improved proving that, under the same assumptions, \(|G : C_{G}(v)| \geq (1.397) \cdot |G|^{0.608}\). \textit{D. Gluck} [Can. J. Math. 37, 442--451 (1985; Zbl 0572.20004)] conjectured that if \(G\) is a finite solvable group, then \(|G: F(G)| \leq b(G)^{2}\) where \(F(G)\) is the Fitting subgroup of \(G\) and \(b(G)\) is the largest character degree of \(G\). Gluck's conjecture was proved for solvable groups with abelian Sylow 2-subgroups [\textit{S. Dolfi} and the reviewer J. Algebra 313, No. 2, 687--694 (2007; Zbl 1120.20007)] and for solvable groups with order coprime to 3 by the author [Comm. Algebra 40, No. 2, 565--574 (2012; Zbl 1248.20017)]. A consequence of the main result of this paper is Theorem 4.1: If \(G\) has odd order, then \(|G : F(G)| \leq b(G)^{\alpha}\), where \(\alpha = 1+ \frac{3 \ln 3}{2 \ln 13}\approx 1.642\).
