The effect of curvature of a cylindrical grating on the diffraction of TE and TM polarized electromagnetic plane waves is considered. For every ratio of the wavelength \(\lambda\) to the period \(d\) a local approximation is established in the planar field by a plane infinite grating, when the radius \(R\) of the circular grating goes to infinity. Error estimates are given and shown to be optimal and of order \(O(d/R)\) outside a transition region.
