Analoguous to the Kazhdan's property (T), the property \(T_B\) defined by \textit{U. Bader} et al. [Acta Math. 198, No. 1, 57--105 (2007; Zbl 1162.22005)] characterizes groups via their representations on a Banach space \(B\). The article under review deals with the property \(T_{(\ell_p)}\), with \(B=\ell_p\). In most results, the (locally compact) groups are assumed second countable. The authors show that \(T_{(\ell_p)}\) for \(p\neq2\) is strictly weaker than (T); also they compare it with the result of Bader, Furman, Monod and Gelander [loc. cit.] who proved that \((T_{L_p([0,1])})\) for some \(1<p<\infty\) is equivalent to Kazhdan's property (T). The authors prove that property \(T_{(\ell_p)}\) is equivalent to an isolation property of the trivial representation from the monomial unitary representations (induced from unitary characters) associated to open subgroups. If the group is moreover totally disconnected, then \(T_{(\ell_p)}\) is equivalent to the isolation property of the trivial representation from the quasi-regular representations associated to open subgroups. Groups with property \(T_{(\ell_p)}\) have certain properties similar to Kazhdan groups: \(G\) is compactly generated iff the maximal abelian quotient \(G/\overline{[G,G]}\) is compact, and iff every subgroup of finite index in \(G\) and every topological group containing \(G\) as a finite index subgroup have property \(T_{(\ell_p)}\). On the contrary, property \(T_{(\ell_p)}\) for \(p\neq2\) is not inherited by lattices, even in the totally disconnected case.
