The authors study the dynamics of the critical surface quasi-geostrophic equation (SQG) and prove that it admits a global attractor of finite fractal dimension. They first give a new proof of regularity for the solution of SQG using a nonlinear maximum principle, then the existence of a compact absorbing set for the dynamics in \(H^1\) is established. Finally they prove exponential decay of high dimensional volume elements in \(H^1\) along trajectories allowing to bound the dimension of the attractor.
