This paper presents three new iterative formulae for solving nonlinear algebraic equations or systems of nonlinear algebraic equations. All the formulae depend on parameters and have order of convergence four. Particular choices of those parameters yield the well-known Ostrowski or Chun's methods. The first two formulae are presented, respectively, in Theorems 1 and 2. Both intend to find the zeros of a single nonlinear equation: the first one involves the computation of a derivative in each iteration, while the second one, included in Theorem 2, is derivative-free. A generalization of the first formula to a system of nonlinear equations is also proposed. Its convergence and error are analyzed in Theorem 3. Illustrative examples, including the molecular interaction problem, show that the new methods are competitive with other widely used ones. In the above mentioned three theorems it should be written that the initial guess \(x_0\) must be sufficiently closed to the exact solution.
