The author obtains geometric conditions on certain noncompact complete Riemannian manifolds which guarantee that the essential spectrum of the Laplacian contains a half line. In certain cases such as locally symmetric spaces of rank 1 of finite volume or manifolds with ends obtained from manifolds with corners, he computes explicitly the essential spectrum.
