Let \(E\to L\) be a map of vector bundles on a scheme Y, L a line bundle, and P(K) the zero scheme of the composition \({\mathcal O}_ E(- 1)\hookrightarrow E\to L\), where \({\mathcal O}_ E(-1)\) is the tautological sublinebundle of E on P(E). For a map \(L\to E\) consider the dual construction where B is defined as the subscheme of P(E) which is the zero locus of the composition \(L\to E\to \twoheadrightarrow Q\) with Q the universal quotient. The author gives short exact sequences for calculating the Chow groups as well as the cohomology groups of the subschemes of P(E), P(K) and B. The results in this paper are applied in the author's paper ``Intersection theory of incidence varieties and polygon spaces'' [Commun. Algebra 18, No.11, 3647-3670 (1990)].
