Given an \(m\times m\) rational matrix function \(W(\lambda)=I+U(\lambda)\), where \(U(\lambda)\) is strictly proper and has contractive values for all real \(\lambda\) (i.e. \(W(\lambda)\) has no poles on the real line, but may have real zeros), the authors show that it admits both left and right pseudo-canonical factorizations. The factors are explicitly expressed in terms of either minimal or nonminimal (with some extra assumptions) realizations. From the proofs of the main results they derive two results generalizing inertia theorems for matrices.
