The authors are concerned with the existence of solutions for semilinear ordinary differential equations, where the linear part is a formally self-adjoint second order differential expression. The problem is treated in a suitable Hilbert space setup. The abstract theory is applied to the study of a vibrating semi-infinite string equipped with a ``nonlinear denoising filter''.
