A striking feature of algebraic \(K\)-theory is that there are constructions of it which are very different-looking; in some cases considerable work is required for a comparison. The good thing about this feature is that different constructions may have different virtues: a particular construction may be especially suited for a particular purpose. The Volodin construction itself exists in several variants originating, of course, in work of Volodin. The construction came to real fame with work of Suslin that was done much later. That work has applications, among others, which are very desirable for variants of algebraic \(K\)-theory that exist for somewhat generalized notions of `ring' (simplicial rings or even \(A_ \infty\)-rings). It is shown in the paper under review that a Volodin type construction of algebraic \(K\)-theory indeed exists in that framework and that it may be identified to other constructions in the desired way. As the authors point out, this work involves non-trivial tricks even in the case of simplicial rings. In the general case of \(A_ \infty\)-rings it also involves a heavy dose of \(A_ \infty\)-technology.
