Apollonian circle packings in the plane are built by repeatedly inscribing circles in the triangular interstices of four mutually tangent circles. The main result of the paper is an effective circle count in Apollonian circle packings that are either bounded or lie between two parallel lines. The counting asymptotics is based on an effective equidistribution result for closed horospheres in the unit tangent bundle of a certain hyperbolic 3-manifold. Also discussed are applications to affine sieves, as well as equidistribution results for surfaces.
