    This paper presents adaptive boundary element methods for positive and for negative as well as for zero-order operator equations. The operators of interest are the boundary integral operators arising from reformulation of boundary value problems. The methods converge at certain quasi optimal rates. The assumptions are mild and typical in the theory of adaptive finite element methods. In particular, no saturation-type assumptions are used. New global and new local discrete bounds for residual-type error estimators are established. Some of the bounds involve oscillation terms. A list of important open problems concludes the paper. An insignificant remark concerning the references: The Technische Hochschule Darmstadt is in Germany, not in Switzerland.
