Independence in topological dynamics is a combinatorial fact of nonemptiness of certain intersections. Topological analogues of strong mixing, weak mixing, and ergodicity are kinds of asymptotic independence in a strict or a mean sense. Also, a recasting of the theory in terms of tensor products is proposed. This approach is applicable to \(C^*\)-dynamical systems. One of the principal aims of the paper is to combinatorialize the local analysis of topological entropy and related mixing properties. This technique provides the basis for a versatile combinatorial approach to the local analysis of entropy. It works equally well for noninvertible surjective continuous maps and actions of discrete amenable groups, applies to sequence entropy where no variational principle exists, and is potentially of use in the study of Banach space geometry.
